Winnie the Pooh

“It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult
words but rather short, easy words like "What about lunch?”

A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

Celebrate Winnie the Pooh Day!

There are some very special bears around.  And some have been us from our own childhoods to the present day - and we still smile when we see them.

Winnie the Pooh is one of those legendary bears, but a comforting sort as well.

The stories of Winnie the Pooh and his friends have kept many a child and adult amused for hours - and not just for leisure reading but for business too!   Books full of friendship, gentleness, time for thinking characters, each full of his or her own individual characteristics.

They have given many a child and adult wonderful times, as they read the stories together, and introduced many a little one to the joys of reading.

There are the Winnie the Pooh characters who resided in Ashdown Forest: Christopher Robin, Eeyore, Piglet, Owl, Rabbit, Kanga, Roo and the bouncy "I'm the only one" Tigger.

The books tell of the adventures they get up to  - the time that Pooh Bear rescues his friend Piglet in the great flood, using an umbrella.  Or the time that Winnie the Pooh got stuck in Rabbit's front door after visiting Rabbit and eating too much honey for elevenses.  Or the time that the friends all went off to look for the North Pole.

The 18th January is a very special day for a very special bear:  it's Winnie the Pooh Day!

10 ideas of ways to celebrate Winnie the Pooh Day!

So if you're a Winnie the Pooh fan - and let's face it, it's hard not to be, he's a Legendary sort of Bear - here are 10 ways you could celebrate the Winnie the Pooh Day on 18th January:

  1. Play Poohsticks, of course!  Here are the rules.  Go to one side of a bridge.  Drop a stick into the water all at the same time. Whoever's stick appears on the other side of the bridge in the water first, wins Poohsticks!
  2. Get the little ones in your life to practice their spelling so they can spell like Owl.
  3. Read a Winnie the Pooh book or read some of his poetry.
  4. Learn more about the author, A.A. Milne.
  5. Check out some great Winnie the Pooh quotes
  6. Eat your snacks with honey or have toast and honey!
  7. Go for a walk in Ashdown Forest - or any forest - and look for heffalumps.
  8. Watch a Winnie the Pooh video.
  9. Read all about the World Pooh Sticks Championships, voted Britain's quirkiest event according to readers in the Countryfile magaine in its 2012 Awards.
  10. Go on a country walk to see if you can find the North Pole.  Take a Little Something for Elevenses.

“We'll be Friends Forever, won't we, Pooh?' asked Piglet.
'Even longer,' Pooh answered.”
